City´s new bus station is now up and running Palma's new bus station in Calle Eusebio Estada, beside the railway bridge, came into operation yesterday, taking many passengers unawares. A lot of passengers had not realised that the bus station was due to open and had gone to the temporary stops in Calles Marques de Fuensanta and Miquel Marques, which they had been using for the past two and a half years. As a result, many of them missed their bus. But at least they could wait in more comfort for the next one. The station is for buses which connect Palma with outlying towns and villages and it is used by several different companies. Most of the passengers agreed that the new station is comfortable and offers seating and protection against the elements, something which they did not have before. The drivers also expressed their approval, although they did have some minor complaints. One of the biggest problems is the traffic light just past the exit, which can lead to traffic problems. They would also like to see more parking space for buses not in service. There were delays in various services provided by the companies Caldentey, DarBus and Aumasa in the morning, because of traffic jams at the Can Blau roundabout from where the buses take the Manacor road. |
New bus station has teething problems Palma's new bus station, for the buses linking the city with outlying towns and villages, has only been open two days, but it is already causing problems and representatives of the city council and the Balearic ministry of public works yesterday got together and tried to work them out. The station, in Calle Eusebio Estada by the railway bridge, was visited by Joaquin Rodriguez, the director general of public works, and Miguel Femenia, head of the council's traffic department. The first problem is the traffic light at the station exit, which is only green for ten seconds. This means at rush hour, 1 and 7pm, there are long tailbacks in Eusebio Estada. The traffic light at the start of the street is also causing problems and it has been described as dangerous by the bus drivers. Miguel Femenia said yesterday that the frequency of the traffic lights would be modified to remedy the problem. According to Joaquin Rodriguez, it will be harder to solve the problems of how the buses leave the city. Most of them have to go out to the Son Castelló industrial estate before they can resume their normal route. But, said Rodriguez, no more level crossings can be created. |

Railway sorry for air conditioning breakdown The SFM Majorca Railway Company yesterday published a public apology for the breakdown of one of its train's air conditioning systems on Monday, the hottest day of the year so far in the Balearics. A spokesperson for the railway company admitted that the culmination of “the lack of air conditioning and the high temperatures made it very uncomfortable for some of the passengers who rightly complained.” The faulty train was eventually taken out of service to be repaired and the 7pm departure from Inca to Palma was delayed an hour with passengers having to wait for the next train with air conditioning. However, numerous complaints were received from passengers about the discomfort on the 8pm train which was packed and carrying a double load. The faulty train was repaired overnight and the SFM Majorca Railway Company yesterday gave its guarantee that normal services have resumed. |
