FCM Tunnel Photo Gallery Home Page

This photo was taken by me in the Summer of 1998 and shows the Goods Area of the old FCM Station in Palma with the goods shed in the centre of the picture and the makeshift bus station to the left. The goods shed is similar to the one which was recently (1998) demolished in the yard of the Soller Station of the Ferrocarril de Soller. Over to the left, beyond the bus station, can be found the disused railway tunnel which once carried goods from the Station at Palma to the dockside area which has now been made into an ornamental lake (see below). The following sequence of pictures shows a number of aspects of that tunnel as seen in 1998 by Barry Emmott and 1999 by John Glover.

The incline has been cleaned up and possibly re-surfaced and there is a new structure to the right where there used to be a sort of make-shift bus station. Taken in 1999, by John Glover, a closer view of the Palma Station entrance to the railway tunnel. In 1998 this area was overgrown with weeds and liberally strewn with discarded hypodermic needles !! Taken in 1998 - just inside the Palma end of the tunnel which is one of the darkest places you have ever been !! Taken in 1998 - about 100 metres inside the Palma end of the tunnel, looking back towards the entrance. A large block of concrete has been cast right across the tunnel at this point and can just be seen in the foreground. Taken in 1998, this photo shows the entrance to the harbour end of the tunnel as embellished in 1952. The tunnel was closed on New Year's Eve 1967. Taken in 1998, this photo shows the bricked-up entrance to the harbour end of the railway tunnel to the right of the opening and a pedestrian walkway to the Cathedral grounds to the left. Taken in 1998, a distant shot of the Cathedral taken across the new lake which now occupies the old harbourside railway goods yard. The tunnel entrance is just off the right side.
